Stone Gallery | Previous Work | About my work

I find in every stone a secret waiting to be born, a silent beauty, a hidden power, a shard of lost wisdom. Something that perhaps was always there, but lain forgotten under the rock of ages, slowly reveals itself with quiet dignity. Carving is a meditative and spiritual practice for me... it is Alchemy... it is my Prayer.
I am drawn by the simplicity of the process, I use no power tools or toxic chemicals, Just stone, the raw body of Mother Earth - mallet, chisels, presence of mind and awareness of body. It is a slow process and in a hurried, noisy, chaotic world the Stone speaks to me always of the value of patience, stillness, and silence. At the core of my work lies a deep wonder and respect for the Earth, the wild and wonderful creatures who roam it and the Deep Mystery that encompasses All.
My inspiration comes from Shamanic Dreams, ancient folklore, myth and Story. In these realms animals are held in the deepest regard, being honoured and acknowledged as spiritual guides, messengers and carriers of symbolic and timeless wisdom.
Each animal is understood to carry specific powers or 'medicine' that relates both to its instinctual nature and characteristics. Sometimes this medicine is offered or requested to assist human beings in their personal and communal journey toward spiritual evolution, healing, harmony and unity.
As we currently bear witness to the devastating destruction and pollution of our natural wildernesses, I cannot help but feel a deep grief in my Soul for the loss of such exquisite beauty and innocence from our world. Many creatures suffer and fight for survival as man's insatiable greed and desire for domination, threatens them with possible extinction. It is our loss as it is theirs, it is our responsibility - not theirs.
As the Native American Chief Joseph of Seattle once said; "The White Man must treat the Beasts of this land as his brothers. For what is man without the Beasts? If the Beasts were gone, Man would die from great loneliness of Spirit, for whatever happens to the Beasts also happen to Man. All things are connected."
Perhaps my carvings, like the old stories that were once told around the fire long ago, are a humble attempt, a simple human yearning, to keep the Soul of the Wild, - it's Mystery and beauty ...alive and present... at least in my own heart. I Dream for the Animals... I dream a future for them... And there is always power in what we choose to Dream."
